Doctor Forced to Amputate Man’s Hands After Son’s Infection

Kevin Breen was a devoted father and husband.

He was a true family man who loved spending time with his wife and children. The man was also an avid sports enthusiast and thoroughly enjoyed life.

But one day, Kevin’s life completely changed. It all started with an infection, and ended with amputation of his left hand, then some fingers on his right hand, and finally both legs from the knees.

3 liters of pus in stomach

The nightmare began during Christmas 2016. Kevin Breen felt that something was not right when he came home one day with feverish symptoms and a sore throat.

Kevin stayed home from work but then began to feel abdominal pain as well. The man decided to go to the hospital, thinking he had the flu. But the tests there showed something very different, according to CNN.

The doctors were puzzled. They sent Kevin home with some medication and told him to come back if he didn’t feel better.

Spread to abdomen

Shortly after, Kevin developed a severe rash on his chest.

Doctors feared toxic shock syndrome. When they further tested the man, they found the bacterium that causes strep throat.

Through the tests, the rash on his chest, and the fact that Kevin’s three-year-old son had previously recovered from a throat infection, doctors were able to determine the cause.

Organs failing

The situation was critical. Kevin’s body was failing bit by bit. The father of the young toddler was deteriorating and his life was hanging by a thread.

Emergency physician Elizabeth Steensma told CNN that “they worked around the clock to keep the man alive” so he could return to his family.

Amputations necessary

The unusual condition led to Kevin needing amputations on both legs from the knees down. He also had to have his left hand amputated, along with some fingers on his right hand.

But against all odds, Kevin survived this ordeal!

Recovered

Kevin has had to undergo numerous surgical procedures in the past. It will never be the same as before, but with determination and a positive attitude, Kevin was able to recover against all odds.

With the help of prosthetics, he can walk again, dress himself, drive, and perform other basic skills.

And most importantly, he can play with his children again and spend time with his beloved wife.

How terrible to read about Kevin’s ordeal. But what a fighter, indeed. He maintains an active lifestyle despite the obstacles along the way.
