Deciding to put a pet to sleep is a tough choice that requires careful consideration.
When Maria had to bid farewell to her old dog Buffy, she brought her son Robbie along for the final goodbye at the veterinarian.
Maria shared on Facebook that while Buffy was getting a routine check-up and teeth cleaning, the vet had a gut feeling that something was amiss.
Tragically, the vet’s intuition was correct as Buffy displayed signs of liver failure.
“…we decided that the best thing we could do was to have him put to sleep. Better that way than her losing the will to live and not being able to eat or drink,” Maria wrote.
Having a pet euthanized can be a heartbreaking experience, but Maria opted to have her son present for the farewell.
As Buffy received the lethal injection, her young son Robbie embraced her tightly. It was Robbie who expressed that putting their pet to sleep was the right decision.
On the journey home, Robbie shared some profound words with his mother
“I know how it feels to not be liked, and I don’t want my pet to feel that way. It’s sad for us when they go to heaven, but it’s a happy day for them.”
Robbie, who had been adopted by Maria following years of severe abuse and neglect, expressed these poignant sentiments, leading Maria to tell him that he was “the coolest son.”
Robbie’s family has a history of adopting elderly dogs, so they are no strangers to the loss of a pet. However, as Robbie pointed out, the duration of knowing someone doesn’t determine the depth of love that can be shown.
When Maria inquired, “What do you mean?” Robbie replied, “Well, you’ve only known me for two years, but you love me as though you’ve known me all my life.”
This touching story of a remarkable boy and his family is truly heartwarming. Share this emotional tale on Facebook.
