Lost and Found: The Heartbreaking Tale of a Woman and Her Missing Dog Reunited After 3 Years

I can’t imagine (and don’t want to imagine) how it must feel if my dog were to run away. The fear of something happening to him would break me.

In most cases, owners eventually see their dog return, but in Monica Mathis’s case, it was a completely different story.

The woman had completely given up hope of ever seeing her dog again. But one day everything changed. Monica saw a photo of a dog that looked exactly like her own dog, Hazel.

Quickly she grabbed her phone to find out the truth.

In March of last year, a dog named DayDay was brought into the Manatee County animal shelter in Florida.

Owner Missing

The dedicated employees of the shelter found that the dog was chipped and registered, but when they tried to locate the owner, they came across outdated information. This prevented them from finding anyone who had lost their dog. This was reported by People.

Since the owner could not be traced, they put DayDay up for adoption to find her a warm, loving home.

Face on Beer Can

After spending 10 months in an animal shelter, the organization decided to launch a new campaign with the local Motorworks Brewery in Florida.

Photos of the faces of dogs still looking for a new home were printed on beer cans. The proceeds from this effort would help start a new shelter.

The cans were sold throughout the U.S., ultimately leading to a beautiful reunion.

In the state of Minnesota, about 225 kilometers away, Monica Mathis saw the new beer cans. On one of the cans, she saw a dog that looked exactly like her own missing dog Hazel, who had run away three years earlier and had never returned.

Dog Discovered

Monica knew exactly what to do and contacted the shelter to obtain information about the dog. And she was right!

So, DayDay was actually named Hazel. The shelter then did everything possible to reunite Hazel and Monica.

Transport was arranged so that the dog could make it all the way to Minnesota.

Beautiful Reunion After 3 Years

“We are over the moon that Hazel and Monica have found each other again. One of our main tasks as a shelter is to bring lost dogs back to their owners. Every animal deserves a warm home, and we know that Hazel can return there,” a shelter representative told People.

It is still unclear how Hazel ended up in Florida. But what is certain is that she is finally back together with her family.

We are extremely grateful that organizations like this are doing everything they can to make animal lives better and to reunite lost dogs with their owners.
