Many must have noticed that New Year’s Eve was far from quiet. In the Netherlands, a tragic incident resulted in the death of a young father and his four-year-old son due to fireworks on a flat porch.
In Germany, a different but equally mournful tragedy unfolded.
The ape habitat at Krefeld Zoo (near Venlo) was almost entirely destroyed by a fire during New Year’s Eve. Nearly thirty animals perished, including orangutans, chimpanzees, and lowland gorillas. Miraculously, two chimpanzees survived without serious injuries.
Earlier, police suspected that the fire might have been caused by a sky lantern. The release of such lanterns is actually prohibited in Germany.
Recently, a 60-year-old woman and her adult daughters have come forward, as reported by AD.
They admitted to releasing five sky lanterns, believing it was completely legal. They had purchased the lanterns online and found no warnings anywhere. The online shop has since been shut down.
What a terrible tragedy! Poor animals…
