The Psychology Behind Today: Why it’s the Most Depressing Day of the Year

Today is Blue Monday. At least, according to British psychologist Cliff Arnall. Based on a self-developed formula, he has determined that on the third Monday of January, the largest number of people feel sad, dejected, and melancholic.

The formula coincides with today

Arnall’s formula takes into account a number of variables, such as the weather, your debt burden, and how long it will be until your next vacation. He also looks at the fact that many people have already failed at their New Year’s resolutions.

Add to that the relatively dark days, and you end up with this week, where ‘naturally’ Monday is the most gloomy.

Criticism from other scientists

It must be said, however, that many scientists and other critics find Arnall’s theory to be complete nonsense. Pseudoscience, according to this group of skeptics.

Furthermore, they believe that there is not enough distinction made between dejection and depression, with the former being perfectly normal and the latter being a condition.

Moreover, Arnall is accused by some of having developed a slick term with a few savvy marketers to sell sun vacations…

At any rate, here’s a selfie of a cheerful monkey, just in case it applies to you:

Opinions seem to be divided. I could use a sun vacation, but after seeing this monkey, I’ll manage just fine :).

What do you think? Total nonsense or is this scientist onto something?
