I’ve never been the biggest sports fan and would rather do something else than sit down and watch a game.
But there are a few sports that I can actually enjoy and one of them is figure skating.
Watching men and women dance on ice to beautiful music is the kind of performance that truly enchants and often captivates me. This along with their beautiful outfits makes for a wonderful viewing experience.
At the moment, the Winter Olympics are taking place in South Korea, where athletes from all over the world are competing for gold. There are so many different sports being played, some well-known, sometimes obscure, while millions of viewers around the world cheer on their home team.
Skating has it all for me; the costumes, the music, and of course the graceful dancing. It truly is a pleasure to watch. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen was in 2014 when then 19-year-old figure skater Jason Brown performed a unique routine inspired by the stage show Riverdance, which has traveled the world with its traditional Irish music and dance.
The performance earned Jason a silver medal at the U.S. Championships and a place on the U.S. Olympic Skating team in Sochi, where he earned a bronze medal for the U.S. figure skating team in the team event and finished ninth individually.
When the music choice “Reel Around The Sun” was initially proposed to him, Jason said in an interview that he had never heard of Riverdance and was initially intimidated by the fast pace of the music.
He told his choreographer Rohene Ward: “I thought, ‘Rohene, you’re crazy, I can’t do this.'”
