From Kitten to Queen: A Woman’s Surprise Adoption Story

All animals have their own habits, but it’s their personalities that set them apart from each other.

When Australian cat lover Stephy Hirst brought home a 12-week-old kitten, he seemed like any other cat.

But Omar, as she named him, turned out to be a very special little creature.

Stephy Hirst adopted Omar in 2013 from a shelter in Melbourne, Australia.

Not long after, she realized that she had actually brought a very special cat home. A cat that would even become a celebrity on the internet!

Stephy had adopted a Maine Coon, a special breed that is most commonly kept as a pet.

Omar grew larger than Stephy and her boyfriend had expected. The couple even thinks they have the largest cat in the world.

In 2017, when Omar was 3 years old, he was 1.2 meters long and weighed a whopping 14 kg.

The previous record was held by a Maine Coon cat from England, who was 1.1 meters long, according to BBC News.

Stephy enthusiastically started a proper Instagram page for her cat, and soon Omar had thousands of followers. Even the world-famous Guinness World Records was interested in the giant Omar.

Like most cats, Omar wakes up early, eats dry food, plays in the garden, and takes naps wherever it’s cozy.

But this special cat also enjoys a healthy piece of kangaroo meat in the evening.

“We buy kangaroo burgers for Omar at the supermarket,” Hirst told BBC News. “It’s the only meat he wants to eat.”

His size is sometimes a problem when he has to go to the vet, for example. He weighs too much to carry, so Stephy has to put him in a special dog crate.
