The 4-year-old girl Sadie was born with Down syndrome.
Her parents realized early on that it would be difficult to also monitor Sadie’s blood sugar levels when she was just a baby.
To get extra help, they decided to bring a dog into the house, Hero. And that’s exactly what he is. A hero!
It took a long time for her parents and Sadie to accept the diagnosis of Down syndrome. Gradually, family life returned to normal, but mom Michelle was forced to bring her daughter Sadie in for heart surgery.
There, they found out that Sadie also had type-1 diabetes.
But when the parents finally returned home and knew the dangers surrounding their daughter Sadie, they brought a new family member home. A Labrador named Hero.
Checking Blood Sugar Levels
Everyone knows that dogs have an excellent sense of smell. And that’s very useful, because they can even smell when people’s blood sugar levels are dangerously low. Hero the dog is specialized in this. Labradors in particular are real specialists. He also became Sadie’s best friend.
When Sadie was at school in Cedar Hills, Hero started acting strange. But the dog was at home while Sadie was at school.
Worries
Hero is normally a very calm dog, but this time he cried so loudly that Michelle began to worry.
Michelle didn’t want to be naive, so she decided to call Sadie’s teacher. Michelle asked the teacher if he could check her daughter’s blood sugar level, reports KUTV.
Drastically Dropped
Sadie’s blood sugar level had dropped to a dangerously low level, from 122 to 82. Life-threatening. If the blood sugar had dropped lower, Sadie could fall into a coma and die.
Hero the dog had already smelled the blood sugar drop from many kilometers away, long before the mother and her teacher came to help.
Important Task
KC Owens, Hero’s dog trainer, said that labradors have millions of receptors in the nose, making them extremely suitable for a job like this. But how Hero noticed the drop in the girl’s blood sugar from miles away is a question for everyone. Probably it was a coincidence. Or not?
Either way, how lucky that Hero behaved that way. No one knows how he did it. But Hero is a true hero.
