Bullfighting has made a comeback in Mallorca, despite being prohibited two years ago.
The decision to allow bullfighting again stems from the 90-year-old arena where the fights occur, marking a significant occasion that warrants a celebratory event, as reported by Expressen.
For centuries, bullfighting has been a cherished tradition in Spain. However, in 2017, regions like Catalonia and the Canary Islands took steps to ban this practice.
Welcome decision
The ban on bullfighting was welcomed by the head of Humane Society International, a leading European animal rights organization.
Expressing her approval, she stated, “Teasing and ultimately killing bulls for entertainment is brutal, so banning it was a compassionate choice,” as reported by Daily Express at the time.

Law was “inadequate”
In Palma, the capital of Mallorca, bullfighting used to be a recurring annual event. This practice was also prevalent in many other cities across Mallorca. However, the courts in Palma deemed the existing law as “inadequate” and “against the constitution.”
With the renowned “Coliseo Balear” arena in Palma reaching its 90th anniversary this year, the law allowing bullfighting has been reinstated. This means that bullfighting is once again permitted, according to Expressen.
Bullfighting returns to Mallorca
The first bullfight is scheduled to take place in Palma on August 9. It remains unclear if other cities in Mallorca will also reintroduce this tradition.
It is disheartening to witness what appears to be a step backward in upholding animal rights, allowing for the legalization of animal cruelty once more. These animals deserve better.
