Adjusting to life in a shelter can be distressing for young puppies. However, in a heartwarming tale, a mother dog went out of her way to provide comfort to two frightened, newly arrived puppies.
Back in 2016, two 9 to 10-week-old puppies found themselves at an animal shelter in Alberta, Canada.
Deanna Thompson, a representative of the organization, shared with ABC News, “They are playful but timid.”
On their first night at the shelter, the two puppies received an unexpected visitor determined to ease their fears. Maggie, an older female dog, managed to escape her kennel to provide company to the young pups.
When staff members saw the mother dog on camera, they were astonished. Alex, one of the staff, expressed, “We had never seen anything like it: a dog breaking free from her kennel to keep two young puppies warm, and she is overjoyed to be with them.”

Alex’s mother, Sandy, noticed Maggie’s act of kindness and allowed her to join the two young pups in their kennel. Maggie cared for the newcomers as if they were her own. Consequently, Sandy decided to keep the trio together for the night.
“Sandy spent 15 minutes with the dogs and felt they belonged together, so she permitted Maggie to remain with the two little ones in the kennel throughout the night,” mentioned Alex to ABC News.
Throughout the night, the three dogs stayed together, and come morning, the staff discovered them snuggled up together.

The puppies appeared serene and content in the embrace of their new surrogate mother. However, Maggie, too, sought warmth and affection as she had given up her own puppies for adoption.
“We believe this is why she grew so attached to the puppies,” explained Alex.
Although such behavior was unprecedented, it highlights the unmatched instinct of a mother.
“This is typical in female dogs, particularly those who have had litters before,” Thompson remarked. “It’s simply part of their nature. We frequently observe this in dogs, even males, who feel compelled to comfort crying puppies.”
This uplifting narrative underscores the strength of maternal love. The shelter verified on Facebook that Maggie found a caring forever home. Hopefully, she will receive the same affection she bestowed upon the two pups.
