Prince Frederik, the son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau, was diagnosed with Alpers syndrome at the age of fourteen, a condition that affects the body’s metabolism. He passed away on March 1st.

The news of Prince Frederik’s passing was shared on the POLG Foundation website, which he founded. He bravely battled Alpers syndrome, a disease that leads to organ failure. His father described it as a never-ending exhaustion, likening it to a depleted battery that eventually loses all power. Unfortunately, no cure currently exists for this rare condition.

Three years ago, Prince Frederik established the POLG Foundation with the aim of promoting research into the disease that ultimately took his life.

Prince Robert of Luxembourg recounted the final moments spent with Frederik before his passing on March 1, 2025, in Paris. He recalled their heartfelt conversations during ‘Rare Disease Day’ on February 28, where Frederik found the strength to bid farewell to his family members.

In a poignant moment, Frederik asked his father, “Dad, are you proud of me?” despite his difficulty in speaking. Robert affirmed his immense pride in his son’s short yet impactful life, noting Frederik’s significant contribution through the POLG Foundation.

Frederik knows that he is my superhero,’ expressed Robert, highlighting the immense impact his son had not only on their family but also on a wider community of supporters through his foundation.
