Storks are incredibly fascinating. They are beautiful, stately animals that have been serving as a metaphorical, reliable deliverer of newborn babies for ages.
It’s becoming rarer to see these magnificent creatures in the wild, but there are stork nests to be found here and there in the country. Such as in Gewande, near Den Bosch.
Stork shelter Herwijnen shared the sad news on Facebook yesterday that the nest located in Brabant had been struck by lightning during the storm the previous evening.
Please note: The following message contains photos that may be considered shocking.

A mother and her two younglings were in the nest at the time of the strike, and the mother and one of her younglings paid for it with their lives. The other youngling miraculously survived and is doing well.

People are shocked by the tragic deaths of the beautiful animals, but there are also bright spots. Reader Ineke Meijboom-Baggerman from Houweninge shared a photo of a stork nest near her in Barneveld where the storks weathered the storm well. Thankfully.

How sad… Nature can be so harsh. Hopefully, the surviving youngling will find a good place.
Kudos to the people at the stork shelter for their care!
