Do you also have a roll of aluminum foil in your kitchen cabinet? If yes, you’re not alone. I use the foil for many things, both for cooking and for storing food. I use it to cover dishes when I bake something in the oven, so it doesn’t stick, and I use it to grill fish instead of oven paper. But after reading an article in The Huffington Post, I realize that it’s something we should be careful with. Using too much aluminum foil while cooking is not a good idea. The metal can leave traces in your food.

Avoid foil while cooking

Since foil is disposable, it doesn’t have a protective layer. Food that comes into contact with the foil during cooking can absorb aluminum. Ghada Bassioni, a professor and head of the chemistry department at Ain Shams University, studies aluminum and cooking, and has found that the amount of absorbed aluminum is very high.

The human body can tolerate a certain amount of aluminum, but when it’s too much, it can be dangerous. The WHO (World Health Organization) says that 40 milligrams per kg of your body weight is a safe amount to have in your body. So, for example, a person weighing 60 kg can consume a maximum of 2,400 mg without worry. That sounds like a lot, but the fact is that aluminum is not only found in the foil. It’s also in certain pans, corn, some cheeses, salt, and even tea contains aluminum. Additionally, it’s found in medication and deodorants, and it’s used to filter water.

Researchers are studying the risks of having too much metal inside. A high concentration of aluminum, for example, was found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Researchers have determined that Alzheimer’s disease is a recent disease, caused by living conditions and industrialization. Aluminum is considered one of the main causes of this severe disease. Studies have also shown that a high intake of aluminum is harmful to people with bone and kidney diseases. It also reduces the growth of brain cells. Since we come into contact with aluminum in many different ways, it wouldn’t hurt to inspect your pots and pans.
