The Deadly Mistake: Mother’s Revelation as Boy Cries with High Fever

Almost everyone has had chickenpox, and I remember how terrible it was. Yet I’m glad I had it as a child, and I don’t have to worry about getting chickenpox as an adult, as it seems to be even worse then.

Chickenpox is not dangerous, and everyone who gets it goes through the same pain, but for one mother, the disease became a complete nightmare for her son.

It all started when Hayley Lyons from Warrington, England took her son to the doctor because the boy had an alarmingly high fever.

The doctor advised Hayley to give her son ibuprofen to reduce his pain and lower the fever. She trusted his advice and followed the doctor’s orders.

After Lewis took the ibuprofen, his condition only worsened, and Hayley hurriedly took him to the hospital for a second time. This time, the boy was diagnosed with a serious infection.

Because one of her friend’s children also had chickenpox, Hayley felt she needed to warn other children.

This is what she wrote on Facebook:

“Chickenpox is going around again, and can I please remind people not to give your children Nurofen or Ibuprofen.

Four different doctors from our local clinic prescribed it to Lewis because we couldn’t get his temperature down. This type of medication is an anti-inflammatory. It reacts with chickenpox, making them penetrate deeper into the skin.

“He eventually ended up with sepsis and was immediately admitted to Alderhey when we got there.

Only because we persisted and took Lewis to a children’s hospital did he turn out okay.

This could have ended much worse if Alderhey’s doctors, with their good care, advice, and knowledge, hadn’t been there.

Only use Calpol to lower the fever.

The Nurofen website states that this medication should not be used with chickenpox. (We found this out after it had already happened). But when our doctors prescribed it, who are we to question it?”

Thanks to Hayley being so vigilant and realizing that Lewis was seriously ill, Lewis is okay now. Read more about the side effects of Ibuprofen in children here.
