# From Neglect to Luxury: The Incredible Transformation of a Starving Dog!
Some animals arrive at shelters in heartbreaking conditions, but with some care and attention, their lives can completely turn around.
That was the story for a neglected dog who was discovered almost starved to death but showed amazing progress in the subsequent weeks.
In September, the South Suburban Humane Society in Illinois took in a severely emaciated dog named Pumpkin. He was first found by a neighbor who feared for his life and took him to the police.
Emily Klehm, the CEO of the South Suburban Humane Society, told Newsweek that while they rescue many dogs, Pumpkin’s case was extreme, leaving them shocked. She mentioned, “He was severely emaciated and unable to walk.”
Photos depict how incredibly thin the dog was – it’s a miracle that he survived.
Veterinarians provided fluids and groomed his fur. Despite the tough start, he began to show improvement and was placed in a foster home with one of the shelter’s staff members.
“Fortunately, we got him into a foster home, where he’s starting to show improvement and is able to stand on his own,” the shelter shared on Facebook. “His journey is far from done, but we’re incredibly proud of him so far.”
Updates from the shelter display the remarkable progress Pumpkin has made in a short period. From being unable to stand initially, he can now walk around the yard independently, wagging his tail.
“This little guy is so strong and getting better every day,” the shelter mentioned. Though still visibly skinny, he is gradually gaining back weight. The shelter expressed hope for further improvement.
Pumpkin’s background remains unclear, but the shelter plans to put him up for adoption once he is medically cleared.
Klehm noted, “Pumpkin will need a home that understands he’s been severely neglected. He doesn’t know how to be a dog, so everything from walking on a leash to toys are all new experiences for him. An experienced dog family would be best.”
Currently, Pumpkin is doing well and enjoys being with his foster family.
It’s saddening that Pumpkin endured neglect for so long, but we’re delighted that he is recovering – we look forward to him finding a loving forever home soon!
