A species on the brink of extinction now has hope.

In Australia, a team of researchers is thrilled as their efforts to boost the species seem to be successful.

Ecologists at the Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary recently made a remarkable discovery.

Within the sanctuary, they stumbled upon a nest filled with newborn spiky creatures.

These creatures are no ordinary ones. They are part of the “western quoll” species, a specific type of marsupial carnivore.

Once abundant across Australia, their numbers have dwindled significantly since Europeans first arrived in the country.

Currently, western quolls only survive in the southwest region of Australia, and in small numbers.

This marsupial species grows to the size of a cat and plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by regulating populations of smaller invertebrates, as well as some reptiles and birds.

New prospects

Lately, researchers have been reintroducing marsupials into the Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary, an area where they had vanished in the past.

With the recent discovery of baby marsupials, it is evident that the researchers’ efforts have paid off. The creatures are thriving and reproducing without issues.

“Regular monitoring shows that the quolls are thriving in the sanctuary, and finding the first pouch young is a positive indication that they have adapted well to their new surroundings,” stated Georgina Anderson, AWC Senior Field Ecologist.

“One of the quolls, named Aang, frequents the camera traps at our release sites. Aang, one of the largest and most conspicuous quolls, with quite a personality, is often seen moving between multiple locations to gather the bait chicken we use and even disrupt our bait vans,” she added.

It’s heartwarming to witness hope for this species! Hopefully, they will flourish once again throughout Australia!
