Last week, a Swedish man was walking through the woods with his camera when he saw something he will never forget.
Suddenly, he witnessed an incredibly rare encounter – he saw a white moose and a brown moose eating together in a field.
“It was amazing to see the two male moose next to each other, especially since one was brown and the other white,” Gunnar Glöersen told the Swedish newspaper Expressen.
Gunnar Glöersen has been filming moose for years, but what he captured on film this time was very special. Gunnar’s camera was already running when the white moose met his brown counterpart.
It all happened just outside Karlstad, a small town a few hours west of the Swedish capital Stockholm. Gunnar had seen each moose bull separately many times over the past years, but never together.
“I’ve seen the white one regularly over the past eight years. And I’ve been following the brown one just as long. So I’ve been taking their photos for years, but this is – as far as I know – the first time they were together for the mating season,” Gunnar told the Swedish newspaper Expressen.
Gunnar is a consultant for the management of wildlife, and he says it is rare to see a brown and white moose together.
On the other hand, it is not uncommon to see more than one moose in the same place. According to him, this is about safety.

“It’s to tease each other a bit and have a show of strength under friendly conditions. This helps them determine who is the biggest and most beautiful, and may prevent unnecessary fighting,” he told Expressen.
Gunnar has not seen the moose together since the fantastic encounter. The white moose, like the other white moose that was seen earlier this month and became an internet celebrity, is protected and cannot be hunted.
Having a white moose nearby has helped Gunnar and his colleagues learn more about where the moose move to because the white moose stands out and is easy to find.
“In summer and winter, he walks in a fairly small area. But as the mating season approaches, he walks about one and a half kilometers to the west. There he seeks out the female moose he’s already familiar with,” Gunnar told Svenskjakt.se.
