When animal lovers saw the animal with the gigantic head wandering the streets, no one could even imagine it was a dog.
When the police in Houston heard about an animal with a swollen head the size of a pumpkin, they went in search of him in the morning.
After a long search, they found him hiding in an abandoned building in the city.
a dog that people had seen walking around with a “pumpkin head” and it was clear that he needed help, and fast.
But it was anything but easy to catch him. He was afraid of people and the police eventually had to lure him into a trap to take him with them.
They took him straight to the vet where he stayed for treatment.
“I went to him. I cried, I couldn’t understand it. He had no hope, no one had ever cared for him, and he was just a puppy. He was only ten months old,” says Anna.
Shoelace around his neck
Someone had wrapped a shoelace around his neck, probably when he was still a small puppy. But the shoelace stayed on as he grew bigger.
The shoelace was getting tighter and eventually cut into his flesh.
The vet couldn’t believe his eyes. This dog had been through a lot.
He had been hit by a car and had a crushed pelvis. They also found several bullet fragments in his legs.
Despite all this, he survived.
“He was very scared at first, but it was as if he knew we wanted to help him. Whatever we had to do with him, he let us do, like a fighter,” says Anna.
Eventually, the little dog got better and after a month at the vet, Anna took him home. He was named Gus and was allowed to continue his healing process with Anna.
Soon he showed his true self and all over where he went, people found him nice. He enjoyed meeting other dogs and new people.
How dog Gus lives today.
Initially, Anna planned to give Gus up for adoption once he was ready. When the time came, she couldn’t bring herself to send him away.
“It was not a difficult choice, I just felt that I couldn’t let him go,” says Anna.
Gus lives with Anna. They walk past schools where they meet children, which Gus loves. He lets everyone pet and cuddle him.
The case of Gus became known worldwide and led to demonstrations against animal abuse.
Gus was also named hero dog of the year and went with his mother to a gala in Hollywood.
Yes, life has really changed for Gus and you can see in his eyes how he enjoys life today. He is truly a dog with a big heart and has found a true home with Anna.
