Coconut oil has gained popularity as a healthy food choice, replacing traditional fats like oil and butter in many households.
However, recent research from the American Heart Association reveals a different side to coconut oil’s impact on health.
The study, based on seven research studies, indicates that coconut oil raises levels of ‘bad cholesterol’ (LDL) consistently across all seven studies.

Surprisingly, the study found no significant health difference between using coconut oil and other previously considered less healthy cooking oils.
Unlike butter and animal fats, coconut oil contains a higher amount of added fats.
The American Heart Association now advises against using coconut oil due to its impact on LDL cholesterol and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Frank Sacks, one of the report’s authors, expresses astonishment at the initial perception of coconut oil as a healthy option, emphasizing that it is essentially a fat.
Previous research promoting coconut oil for weight loss may have contributed to its misconception as a healthy choice.

Researcher Marie-Pierre St-Onge explains that coconut oil’s promotion for weight loss is due to its quick digestion properties that boost metabolism.
While coconut oil may not be as healthy as once believed, it can still be used moderately and has benefits as a cream for skin and hair.
