Sometimes animals enter our lives unexpectedly. While we often choose our pets, sometimes they choose us instead.
One such story is that of a dog who kept escaping from a shelter and ultimately found a new home, where he now assists other shelter dogs in need.
In 2017, Scout was residing at the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Michigan, where his knack for escaping was notable. Scout, described as a “very intelligent dog,” had a talent for opening doors and gates.

Scout escapes to the same place every time
What made Scout’s escapades even more intriguing was that he consistently fled to the same location: Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
“I don’t know why he chose us,” mentioned Marna Robertson, the administrator of Meadow Brook, to UpNorthLive.
After his third escape, Scout was discovered fast asleep on the facility’s couch. This incident led the staff to believe that it was meant to be. Consequently, they adopted Scout as a permanent resident, feeling that he had chosen his own home.

Since then, Scout has become an integral part of the facility’s staff, offering valuable assistance to the patients. The staff notes that Scout helps “create a sense of home” for individuals who are separated from their own pets.
“Scout knows all the residents. He can discern who belongs and who doesn’t, and he helps maintain order in the household,” shared Jenny Martinek, the Meadow Brook Household Coordinator, with UpNorthLive.
“He has a keen sense of when someone is unwell, and he will stay by their side to provide comfort,” added clinical care coordinator Stephanie Elsey.

Scout has brought immense joy and an unexpected addition to their lives. In recognition of this, the staff organized a fundraiser for Scout’s former shelter.
The medical facility launched the “Scouts House Paws for the Pantry Fundraiser,” collecting donations of pet food and toys to be given to the Antrim County Animal Shelter.

While Scout has found his perfect home, not every animal is as fortunate. Witnessing Scout and his new family giving back to needy pets is heartwarming.
“Scout truly brings joy to our residents, staff, and visitors,” the facility shared on Facebook. “This is his home. He chose us. Because Scout has had such a big impact on all of us, we thought it was very important to show our support to local animal shelters.”
Scout’s story is a beautiful example of a dog choosing its own family, and it’s evident that he found the perfect match.
