Dogs are incredibly loving and devoted animals. They can develop genuine friendships with other animals and stand by them during challenging times.
Recently, a stray dog displayed the true essence of love and friendship by refusing to leave her best friend’s side after he was struck by a car.

According to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, the stray dog was hit by a car on Highway 70. A rescuer noticed a group of people gathered around the injured dog and stopped to offer assistance.
The dog suffered severe injuries, which deeply affected his best friend, another stray dog, who remained steadfast by his side.

Heart & Soul
The concerned dog was wary as the rescuers reassured her that they were there to help her friend. The shelter named the injured dog “Soul” and his loyal friend “Heart”.
When Soul was rushed to the trauma center for urgent care, Heart was also taken along.

Unfortunately, Soul’s injuries from the accident were too severe. He had a broken back, and the rescue organization determined that it was beyond repair.
“At Stray Rescue, we do everything possible to save a life, but when there is no possibility of a good quality of life, the most compassionate choice is to bid farewell,” explained Natalie Thomson of Stray Rescue to Newsweek.
All they could do was alleviate Soul’s suffering in his final moments and allow his loyal best friend a chance to say goodbye.

Soul passed away, but Heart remained by his side, unwilling to leave.
“She wanted to be with him, so we let her have time to bid farewell. We kept her close the entire time, hoping she would comprehend the situation,” Thomson stated.
A poignant photograph captures the moment when Heart drifted off to sleep on Soul, remaining faithful until the end as she mourned for her companion. “We are all grieving alongside her,” wrote Stray Rescue.

Heart’s unwavering loyalty and love deeply touched everyone, prompting them to find a special way to honor Soul forever.
They announced on social media their intention to create a pendant for Heart’s collar containing some of Soul’s ashes, “so she can always carry him with her.”

Both dogs were without collars or microchips, indicating they were likely strays. It remains uncertain how long they had been companions on the streets, but Heart appeared visibly dirty.
The rescuers gave her a much-needed bath and were committed to providing her with all the affection and care she deserved: “Time to begin healing, sweetheart.”
