Surprise Encounter: Family Discovers Curled-Up Critter on Stairs – Wait Until You See What It Is!

Someone had suddenly taken up residence in the family’s living room.
And it wasn’t just anyone.

You don’t get an unexpected visitor every day, but when a family in Wellington, New Zealand, came home after a long day, they saw something lying on their doormat.

There, curled up on the steps, was a small seal peacefully sleeping, according to The Dodo.

The family was shocked – how had the little seal made it all the way from the sea to their door?

“This little pup was found earlier this week catching some z’s on the front porch of a family’s house in Wellington. He had quite the journey- he climbed the steps of the sea wall, crossed a road, walked a footpath, a driveway, and one more set of stairs before he fell asleep,” wrote the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC).

According to conservationists, people often think resting seals need help. But this one seemed to be in good health.

Taken to a safer place

These fur seals, locally known as ‘kekeno’, are found along the coasts of New Zealand and Australia – but usually not on people’s porches.

“At this time of year, newly-weaned pups leave their colonies to explore, making it a great time to spot them,” the DOC writes.

Choosing the doormat of this family as his sleeping place was not ideal. So, an officer was called to help him find a better resting place.

They gently took the little seal and brought him along the coast to a safe spot, where neither dogs nor roaring traffic would be a problem.

The seal was a bit confused, but happy and content in his new location.

What a cute animal. Luckily, he could be taken to a safe place.
