Yellow Surprise: Dierenliefhebber ontdekt geheim in chimpansees vacht

When animal lovers see a yellow object creeping on the chimpanzee’s body, they are puzzled about its identity.

Upon reviewing the security footage, the mystery is solved.

In September, the monkey was confined in a backyard cage for an extended period.

In 2002, she was thankfully rescued and now resides in the Save the Chimps sanctuary, where she enjoys ample space to roam and play. She has been part of the sanctuary for more than two decades, constantly learning and growing.

However, towards the end of last year, her caretakers noticed a new behavior in the chimpanzee. Whenever she would come in to eat, she would bring something yellow: bees.

The staff was intrigued and decided to investigate by reviewing the security tapes.

CATCHING BEES

They soon observed September among the flowers, attempting to catch bees.

“We were curious about where she was getting them until I witnessed her catching bees one day,” mentioned Rebecca Muscat, September’s care technician, to The Dodo.

“She allows them to crawl on her body and carefully relocates them to her head or ear to ensure their safety. When she lies down, she watches them move across her belly. If they stray too far, she returns them to her body.

The bees seem to have formed a bond with her, and her caretakers witness her playing with them daily.

“Bees illustrate how chimpanzees are unique individuals with a higher level of cognitive awareness than often credited, which is why it’s one of my favorite topics to discuss,” Muscat added.

September has always displayed exceptional creativity and awareness, and her interaction with her bee companions is just a glimpse into her remarkable nature.

“September is a truly remarkable, intelligent, and distinctive chimpanzee, and this story exemplifies why,” explained Muscat.
