Rescued: Hond turns hero as he saves deformed stray kitten – now she’s getting a second chance

Some animals are born with a disability but still deserve love and a chance to thrive. That was the case for Tater Tot, a kitten born with malformed limbs who is now receiving the care he needs after an inspiring rescue.

According to a TikTok video, Bebe, a Newfoundland dog, discovered Tater Tot while exploring the area around her home. Bebe often brought kittens home, but this one was particularly unique and needed some special care.

Tater Tot: a Malformed Stray Kitten

The kitten’s four limbs were malformed. His new foster mother, Ash Houghton, told Newsweek that his front legs were “stuck in a downward 90-degree angle” and his hind legs were “completely curled.”

Houghton is a co-director of Kitty CrusAIDe, a non-profit animal rescue group from Utah, now caring for Tater Tot. In addition to his malformed limbs, the kitten also has a cleft palate, making it difficult for him to latch onto a bottle, so he needs tube feeding.

But despite the challenges, the rescuers wanted to provide this kitten with the best care to give him a chance at life.

On the Road to Recovery

“We have a long road ahead of us, but he’s a fighter, and we’re going to do everything we can to help this special boy not only survive but thrive!” wrote Ash on Instagram.

Tater Tot got his name through a naming contest that served as a fundraiser for his medical expenses. According to updates from the rescue organization, Tater Tot has received corrective splints on his front legs (he doesn’t seem to like them, but hopefully they correct the deformity without needing surgery) and they are waiting for Tater Tot to grow bigger and stronger before devising a plan for his other issues.

Tater Tot Online

“I’ve always shared my foster kittens online in various cat groups, but people seem to really connect with this little guy,” Houghton told Newsweek. “I knew he was cute, but I had no idea everyone would find him so endearing. We definitely weren’t prepared for the level of attention he has been getting!”

“The world loves underdogs, and this little guy has a lot stacked against him. Many people say his fight and will to live are truly inspiring, and I know he’s been a little inspiration for me.”
