Labradors are one of my favorite dog breeds.
Labrador is also a region on the east coast of Canada, in the northernmost part of Quebec. The region experiences harsh weather conditions and is quite isolated. People here live in harmony with nature, relying on fishing as a significant source of food and income.
Alan Russell, a fisherman specialized in crab fishing, along with Mallory Harrigan, spotted something out of the ordinary while at sea one day. They witnessed a peculiar sight they would never forget.
Their attention was drawn to a large iceberg shaped like a mushroom.
Alan and Mallory noticed an unusual figure atop the iceberg, initially mistaken for a seal, as Mallory recounted to The Dodo.
Upon closer inspection, they realized it was not a seal but an Arctic fox, a land animal, stranded in the sea.
It remains a mystery how the fox ended up there and for how long it had been marooned in this desolate place, facing an uncertain fate.
Immediately recognizing the dire situation, the couple knew they had to intervene.
An unusual rescue
Being animal lovers, Alan and Mallory sailed their boat towards the iceberg and approached it cautiously.
The frightened fox seemed wary of their presence.
“Despite the fox’s resistance, we managed to bring it on board,” Mallory shared. “We understood that we were its only hope as the shifting winds were pushing the ice further out to sea.”
The fox’s demeanor visibly improved once off the iceberg. The fishermen quickly arranged a warm space for the fox on board.
Although the fox could have easily lost hope, its spirits rekindled after the rescue. The crew provided the shivering animal with canned food on board.
Upon reaching the harbor, they released the fox, who shook itself and darted off.
Thanks to Mallory and Alan, this fox was saved from a perilous situation and now has a hopeful future ahead. Let’s hope it never faces such danger again!
