When Sharkie was a puppy, he was given to a family who have now decided to surrender him because they feel he is “too big.” This has sparked much anger among those who have read his story.
Dogs are wonderful animals in many ways and they give lots of love to the family they live with.
When a person takes a dog, it is usually with the understanding that the animal will stay by their side for many years.
Abandoning Your Dog
Unfortunately, there are many different reasons why some dog owners are forced to give up their pet, as life can change quickly.
Everything from illness within the family to changed financial circumstances or altered opportunities to be at home can lead to not being able to keep your furry friend anymore.
But there are also people who abandon their dog for reasons that some may find very strange.
Didn’t Want the Dog When He Grew Up
One of those dogs is Sharkie, who is currently in the kennel of the Humane Society of Broward County in Florida (USA).
When his family brought him here, they explained that they didn’t want him anymore.
They got the dog when he was a puppy, but now that he has grown up, they find him too big. They think that he pulls on the leash too much during walks.
“I may be big, I have short legs and a long body, but that just means there is more to love about me,” shelter staff wrote about Sharkie on their website.
They also advocate not to do like his previous owner who abandoned his dog because he grew up.
“Irresponsible Owners”
In a post on Instagram, the shelter explained Sharkie’s situation, with many followers harshly criticizing the previous owners.
“It just makes me so angry that people get puppies and want to give them away when they get bigger. This sweetheart pulls and is strong, but the problem is the people in the family.”
“How irresponsible can you be???!!!! Now just hoping that karma visits them one day and their kids think they are ‘too old’ to be around.”
“I hope someone looks past the previous irresponsible owners. Training a dog is possible. And there are SO many options like free apps, trainers, and leashes to help with these very common things.”
Dear Sharkie, we truly hope you find a loving family soon!
