It was a heartbreaking sight: a German shepherd wandering alone in the streets of Detroit, with nothing but her favorite stuffed animal to keep her company.
But now, this beautiful dog is safe and sound after being rescued.
According to FOX 2 Detroit, local residents spotted the dog roaming the streets and, although she is female, they named her “Nicholas”. Neighbors reported that the dog became homeless after her owner passed away.
Alone on the street…with her stuffed animal
As the story of the dog spread, several local groupsâincluding It Is Pawzable Dog Training, South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, Sugar Mutts Dog Grooming, and Almost Home Animal Rescueâcame together to catch the dog and bring her to safety.
âEveryone comes together and works as a team, which is so great,â Katrina Weaver, owner of It Is Pawzable, told FOX 2.
Fortunately, their rescue mission was successful: Almost Home No Kill Rescue reported on May 3rd that the dog was successfully captured and now under their care. They have renamed “Nicholas” to “Nikki” since she is a female.
Looking for a new home
âOnly good things from here and on to a better life!â the rescue wrote on Facebook. âThanks for all your support, Nikki is now going to a loving home!â
There is one complication: Nikki reportedly has heartworm, which requires four weeks of treatment. Nikki is now taking it easy, receiving medication, and going for walks on a leash. Once she is recovered, the rescue will look for her new home.
In the meantime, Nikki is in good handsâand yes, she still has her beloved stuffed animal with her â¤ď¸
We are so happy that this beautiful dog is now safe and healthy, with her beloved stuffed animal â¤ď¸ Hopefully Nikki will recover and find a great new home soon!
