Police respond to ‘injured puppy’ on road – only to discover it’s a prairie wolf

The police received a call about an injured dog. But the animal turned out to be something very different.

The police in the state of Massachusetts, USA, thought they had been alerted to a runaway dog during a routine job.

But when they arrived on the scene, they realized they were dealing with something very different.

It was police officer Carlo Mastromattei who sounded the alarm, after a witness called and announced that a lonely and injured “puppy” needed help. But Carlo quickly realized when he arrived and looked at the small four-legged being that this was not a dog, as reported by the animal site The Dodo.

Realization police officer: this is not a dog

It was a beautiful spring day three years ago when Carlo arrived on the scene.

  • Officer Mastromattei stopped at the location of the animal, on the edge of the busy road at Suffolk Downs, and saw a small, scared, lonely coyote pup. The puppy’s mother was nowhere to be found, wrote the Massachusetts State Police on Facebook.

Carlo knew he had to do something for the wild animal. It couldn’t lie near the dangerous road. So he called the nearby Oceanview Kennel. Lisa Cutting answered the call and indeed, shortly afterwards she appeared. Lisa helped the police to safely remove the little coyote from the spot using a cage, stated the police on their Facebook page.

Police officer Carlo let the little coyote pup spend the night in his and his girlfriend AnnBeth’s home. They are both big animal lovers and let the wild animal sleep comfortably, in the cage, at home.

  • As you can see in the photos, he received very good care, writes the state police on their Facebook page and goes on to say:
  • The next day, Ocean View Kennel transported the puppy to Tufts Wildlife in North Grafton, where he was examined and deemed healthy. The little rascal will be transferred to a nature specialist in the Berkshires, who will rehabilitate him and acclimate him to life in the wild, where he will eventually be released to live his life.

At the time of writing, the Facebook post has received thousands of likes and comments praising the police officer who took care of the poor animal.
