Slingeraap Elvis hits 60: A Celebratory Journey through the Oldest Primate’s Life

Many animals live long lives, but only a few become the oldest of their kind, setting records with their exceptional lifespans.

Recently, a zoo celebrated the 60th birthday of a spider monkey, believed to be the oldest in the world.

Zoo Boise celebrated Independence Day and honored the birthdays of two of its oldest residents, including Elvis, a black-handed spider monkey.

Elvis’s exceptional age makes him possibly the world’s oldest spider monkey.

Elvis was donated by a private owner in 1962 and arrived at the zoo in 1973, although his age is still being verified.

Elvis has surpassed the typical lifespan of spider monkeys due to human care, as they face threats like hunting and habitat loss in the wild.

Gummy, another spider monkey of the same age, celebrated her 60th birthday at Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo in Rome, New York, this year. Yet, Zoo Boise believes Elvis could break the record once confirmed.

As Elvis ages, the zoo staff ensures his health and activity levels mimic those in the wild.

“He’s the exception, and he’s still insanely active,” said Jeff Agosta, the zoo’s marketing representative.

Known for being protective of his female caretakers, Elvis is not very friendly with male zoo staff.

Alongside Elvis, the zoo celebrated the 100th birthday of Aldabra tortoise Mr. Mac, who is known for sunbathing and enjoying salads.

While Mr. Mac’s age is impressive, the oldest tortoise globally, Jonathan, is 190 years old.

Mr. Mac has become a beloved figure at the zoo, attracting visitors with his long lifespan.

Animals like Elvis and Mr. Mac at Zoo Boise play a crucial role in conservation efforts by inspiring visitors to support the cause.

“The animals are ambassadors for their species and help raise funds for conservation,” Agosta mentioned.

Happy Birthday, Elvis! Here’s to many more remarkable years ahead! ❤️??
