Head Lice Nightmare Goes Viral: A Man’s Extreme Battle

A viral video showing a tricycle driver battling a severe head lice infestation has been circulating on social media, sparking concern among Filipino netizens.

The video, which has since been removed, was shared by Facebook user Primo Onipa with the intention of raising awareness about the risks associated with untreated lice infestations.

Onipa also emphasized the importance of good hygiene among drivers who interact with numerous passengers on a daily basis.

The disturbing footage reveals lice crawling on the driver’s neck and shirt, illustrating an extreme case of infestation.

Dr. Jay Recasata from Faces and Curves highlights the discomfort caused by such cases. He explains, “A head lice infestation is contagious, thriving in the hair roots, multiplying quickly, and feeding on blood from the scalp. This can lead to scalp sores and potential bacterial infections,” as reported by Filipino Times.

Dr. Recasata notes that treatment is straightforward, involving a special shampoo costing less than 10 euros per bottle. However, if left untreated, lice infestations can escalate. Dr. Enrique Collantes from Derma Clinic warns that severe infestations may result in anemia and malnutrition as lice feed on the host’s blood.

According to the National Health Service, head lice spread through direct contact with an infested individual or by sharing personal items like combs, brushes, and hats. Lice can also briefly survive on upholstered furniture, bedding, and towels, facilitating further infestation.

To prevent infestations, it is recommended to wash clothing and bedding in hot water, vacuum floors regularly, and soak hairbrushes in hot water for five to ten minutes. These preventive measures can help maintain a lice-free environment.

Ensuring good hygiene is essential, especially for individuals who have frequent contact with others, such as drivers and commuters.
