Dogs are known for their loyalty and protective instincts, always ready to safeguard their owners, even at their own peril.
Such was the case for a heroic dog in the United States that bravely defended her owner against a fierce mountain lion.
Erin Wilson, residing in Trinity County, California (USA), is the proud owner of Eva, a 2.5-year-old Belgian Malinois. During a leisurely stroll by the river, their peaceful day took a terrifying turn.
As reported by the Sacramento Bee, a mountain lion pounced on Erin, growling and clawing at her. With no one else in sight, Erin called upon Eva for help, and the loyal dog leaped into action.
Eva fearlessly stood up to the mountain lion, fiercely defending Erin. Despite sustaining severe injuries, including a grip on her skull by the mountain lion, Eva successfully led the predator away from her owner.
Erin reciprocated Eva’s bravery by warding off the lion with makeshift weapons and seeking aid from a passing driver who used pepper spray to deter the animal.
Although the mountain lion eventually let go of Eva, the dog endured significant injuries to her skull, as Erin recounted to the Sacramento Bee, “She had a few lacerations on her face, and there was just a lot of blood coming out of her mouth.”
Eva was promptly taken to the hospital, where her condition remained critical. However, the valiant dog managed to pull through. To assist with Eva’s medical expenses, Erin set up a GoFundMe, sharing that veterinarians are hopeful for Eva’s recovery.
“She is still completely sedated, heavily and is until we’re able to know for certain that the pressure in her head had dropped,” Erin wrote. “She has 2 fractures in her skull, a puncture in her sinus cavity and severe swelling around her left eye, which is impeding her sight.”
Despite enduring severe injuries, Eva’s courage saved her owner’s life.
“I think it’s fair to assume that the dog probably saved her life,” remarked Captain Patrick Foy of the Department of Fish and Wildlife to the Sacramento Bee.
“My dog is my hero and I owe my life to her,” expressed Erin on GoFundMe.
