When someone abandons a pet, it’s always heartbreaking. Even if you can’t care for them anymore, it’s crucial to surrender them to a shelter or ensure they find a new loving home.
Recently, a distressing photo went viral online, showing a dog abandoned and tethered to a fire hydrant by its previous owner. Thankfully, the dog is now safe and receiving proper care.
The dog, a mixed-breed known as Baby Girl, was left tied to a yellow fire hydrant in the village of Green Bay, Wisconsin (USA).
As reported by WFRV Local 5, a note left with the dog explained that the owners were unable to continue caring for her. The dog was also provided with a backpack containing treats, toys, and food.
Although the owners likely had valid reasons and believed they were acting responsibly, the situation was understandably shocking to Kyle Rose Engelhardt, a local resident who discovered the dog and shared the story on Facebook.
Kyle expressed her heartbreak at seeing Baby Girl in that state, stating, “Can’t believe anyone can do this,” and asked the community if anyone recognized the abandoned dog.
After contacting the police, Kyle brought Baby Girl to the Wisconsin Humane Society, an organization that took the dog into their care.
Reports indicate that Baby Girl is now “doing great” while being looked after at the shelter.
While it may not have been the most responsible way to part with a pet, many people reacted with anger to the story. Nevertheless, the Humane Society showed compassion towards the owners and directly addressed them in a Facebook post:
First of all, we are so sorry that you had to say goodbye to your best friend. We see your love in the bag you carefully packed with all her favorite things. We see your love in the way you tied her leash so she wouldn’t get hit by a car. We see your love in the way you placed her in the middle of a neighborhood where she would be
