It’s always a thrilling day at a zoo when a new baby animal arrives, especially if it’s from an endangered species. Each new birth plays a vital role in ensuring the survival of the species for future generations.
The Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot, North Dakota (USA) recently had an extra special reason to celebrate as an Amur tiger gave birth to three tiger cubs.
Zoya, a female Amur tiger at the zoo, welcomed three adorable cubs into the world on March 19.
As reported by Minot Daily News, zoo officials mentioned that Zoya is doing well caring for her cubs, who are progressing nicely. The animal keepers will give the mother and cubs time to bond closely before conducting a veterinary examination.
“The zoo staff did an excellent job planning and preparing for this special event. Despite not having all the latest technology, they successfully monitored Zoya’s pregnancy from mating to birth predictions,” said zoo director Jeff Bullock.
The Amur tiger, also known as the Siberian tiger, is classified as an endangered species by the IUCN Red List. According to National Geographic, their population saw a significant decline in the 20th century mainly due to poaching.
While conservation efforts have prevented their extinction, there are fewer than 4,000 Amur tigers left in the wild today. Therefore, each new birth is crucial for the species’ survival.
The Roosevelt Park Zoo, actively engaged in a breeding program to support the growth of the Amur tiger population, expressed joy over the arrival of the tiger triplets.
“Conservation comprises countless small acts, not one grand gesture,” stated the zoo. “We take pride in being a part of the conservation narrative.”
According to Minot Daily News, the cubs are currently bonding with their mother away from the public view but will be accessible for viewing as they grow older.
The zoo’s tigers reside in the Amur Tiger Valley, a specially designed exhibit opened in 2020, providing these majestic animals with a spacious and natural habitat.
