It’s incredible how heartless some individuals can be towards animals. Many pets are abandoned by their owners and left to face dire circumstances.
Fortunately, there are compassionate people who are willing to provide these animals with a second chance. This was the case for a neglected dog who went through a challenging journey to recovery after being rescued. Thankfully, he has now found a new loving home.
The dog, now known as Olympus, was abandoned outside the Richmond Animal Care and Control shelter in Virginia, USA.
This poor dog was left outside overnight in freezing conditions and was only discovered the next morning. Animal welfare workers found the dog in a distressing state.
“He couldn’t even stand, was extremely cold, emaciated, had dirt around his mouth, and appeared so pitiful that it touched our hearts,” stated RACC on Facebook.
Even for professionals who work with rescued animals, this was an especially harrowing case: “Sometimes it becomes too much,” they expressed.
“Occasionally, the cruelty towards animals becomes overwhelming, and we find ourselves on the ground in tears.”
Instead of giving in to despondency, they took immediate action to save the dog’s life. The shelter director provided warmth to Olympus in their vehicle as they rushed to the hospital, where veterinarians administered urgent care.
“His body temperature was too low to register, and his blood pressure was too weak to insert an IV,” RACC reported.
“They warmed him up, initiated sub-Q fluids, and hoped for his recovery.”
There was uncertainty about whether Olympus would pull through. However, an update later revealed that the poor dog “was still alive and progressing well,” with gratitude for the support from followers.
They also mentioned that an investigation into the matter was underway, albeit with no further details provided at that time.
Update: March 2022
Richmond Animal Care and Control shared an encouraging update on Olympus’ journey: he has been adopted!
On March 1, RACC announced that Olympus was doing “fantastic,” having regained 55% of his original weight. His white blood cell count had returned to normal levels.
Olympus had made significant strides in his health under their care, prompting them to seek a suitable adoption. They were in search of a family capable of continuing his recovery journey, particularly experienced in caring for dogs with medical needs.
“Let’s find the perfect home for this wonderful dog!” they expressed.
On March 5, it was announced that after extensive treatment resulting in positive outcomes and significant veterinary expenses, Olympus had finally found his happy ending. He was welcomed into a loving new family!
RACC shared a picture of Olympus with his new family, exuding happiness on his way home:
We have every confidence that his new family will shower him with the care and affection he deserves on his path to full recovery, letting him know that he is now in good hands after enduring such cruelty.
There doesn’t appear to be any updates on the search for Olympus’ previous owner, but the investigation likely continues.
RACC once again expressed gratitude for the support received, the “healing prayers and well-wishes from around the nation,” recognizing Olympus’ story as a true miracle.
It’s unfathomable that someone could abandon a dog to such a fate. We are immensely grateful that this rescue operation offered him the love and care he needed just in time. Most importantly, he has discovered a warm and loving forever home!
Thanks to everyone who contributed to giving this sweet dog a second chance!
