Tragic Beach Sand Collapse: 18-year-old Killed, Sister Injured – Rest in Peace

Especially young deaths are tragic. A family was on vacation when a terrible accident occurred that will change their lives forever.

The police of Toms River, in New Jersey (United States), stated that an 18-year-old tragically lost his life after getting trapped under the sand while digging a large hole with his sister.

The 17-year-old sister sustained injuries but was rescued by emergency services and received immediate medical attention.

Emergency services were mobilized around 4:09 p.m. at the beach entrance on Seaview Road on the barrier island.

The sister was rescued on time, but Levi Caverly did not survive the collapse. His body was recovered only at 6:45 p.m. that evening.

The accident occurred when 18-year-old Levi Caverly from Maine and his 17-year-old sister were digging a large hole when it collapsed and trapped them. The teens were playing with a frisbee and had dug a 3-meter hole.

Emergency response teams from neighboring towns also assisted in the rescue and recovery operation.

The whole incident is heartbreaking. A day of family fun turned into a devastating nightmare. Levi’s mother shared a video of her son before the horrific incident. Many well-wishers poured in with their condolences. From what people wrote, it seemed like Levi Caverly was loved by everyone.

Such incidents are not as rare as you might think.

Dr. Bradley Maron, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, has tracked similar incidents and reported that between 1997 and 2007, as many as 52 incidents of the same nature were recorded. And 31 of those cases turned out to be fatal.

Local authorities urged beachgoers not to dig too deep holes or tunnels in the sand. Hopefully, tragedies like this can be avoided in the future.

What a sad incident. We wish the family strength and hope they can overcome this tragic loss.
