This timeless display of maternal love was beautifully illustrated recently when two mothers—a human and a gorilla—shared a heartwarming moment just in time for Mother’s Day.
Emmily Austin, a mother from Maine, USA, accompanied by her five-month-old baby, Canyon, paid a visit to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston last weekend.
Upon approaching the gorilla exhibit, they were taken by surprise when Kiki, a western lowland gorilla, gazed inquisitively at Emmily’s baby.
“As I held my child up to the glass, I told the gorilla, ‘Look, this is my baby.’ I couldn’t help but think, ‘How amazing would it be if she came over to see him?'” Emmily recounted to News Center Maine.
To their delight, Kiki, the gorilla mother, approached the glass and lovingly fixed her gaze on the baby.
Approaching closer, Kiki seemed captivated by the baby, gently touching the glass as if wanting to reach out and connect with the little one. This heartwarming moment drew the attention of onlookers at the zoo.
“It was incredibly touching,” shared Emmily. “She sat there for over five minutes, just gazing at him with such tenderness.”
There seemed to be a profound connection between these two new mothers. It was later revealed that Kiki, a mother to five young gorillas, had welcomed her youngest, Pablo, just the previous October.
While Emmily proudly displayed her baby, Kiki took Pablo and proudly showcased her own offspring.
“The love in her eyes was palpable,” Emmily recounted. “She wanted to introduce her baby to mine.”
This visit to the zoo was undoubtedly a special and unforgettable experience for this mother and her baby, a moment that will forever be cherished.

“Numerous people approached us, sharing that it was one of the most beautiful things they had witnessed,” Emmily shared with News Center Maine. “It was truly touching, the emotions were palpable in the air.”
