Have you ever experienced a sense of not fitting in? Like you lack roots? Or that nothing seems to hold meaning in your life?
This feeling may pass swiftly for most, but for some, it may indicate a deeper, more troubling truth.
Such was the case for Steve Carter, an American who stumbled upon a photograph online one evening that left him utterly stunned.
Steve, hailing from Philadelphia, had grown up with his adoptive parents on the east coast in New Jersey.
As Steve matured, he sensed a void in his life—a nagging feeling of something amiss. Although he had a content upbringing with his adoptive parents, certain aspects puzzled him.

For instance, Steve had very few recollections from his early years. He was informed that he had been adopted at the age of 4 from an orphanage in Honolulu, Hawaii.
However, as he grew older, discrepancies in his past emerged. He lacked a birth certificate and any knowledge of his biological parents.
At 35, Steve’s curiosity about his origins peaked. It was then he encountered the story of Carlina White.
Carlina, upon reaching adulthood, uncovered that her adoption was illegal. She had, in fact, been kidnapped as an infant from Harlem Hospital in New York City in 1987.
Reunited after 23 years
At just 19 days old, Carlina was taken to the hospital by her parents due to a fever. Seizing an opportunity, a woman disguised as a nurse abducted the baby.
The case remained unsolved for years until Carlina resolved her own abduction, leading to a heartwarming reunion with her biological parents 23 years post the traumatic event.
Upon reading about Carlina’s ordeal, Steve swiftly took to the internet. He stumbled upon a chilling photo on a missing children website, missingkids.com, which resembled him—a boy from a simulated kidnapping case in Hawaii.

Subsequently, Steve contacted the Honolulu authorities.
“I provided them with my information, and they took it from there,” said Carter. “They spearheaded all the investigative work.”
It was revealed that Steve was on the missing children registry. Steve had been snatched as an infant. His original name was Marx Panama Moriarty Barnes.
Reportedly, Steve’s mother had taken him out for a stroll one day but never returned. Nevertheless, his biological father and a sister had never relinquished hope of reuniting with him.
Following a DNA test, Steve was able to track down his biological father, Mark Barnes, residing in California. Steve also discovered a half-sister from his mother’s side.
