It is disheartening to see the cruelty some individuals inflict on dogs. Unfortunately, innocent animals like dogs endure unnecessary pain and suffering too often.
This was the unfortunate reality for a dog who became a victim of a brutal attack that left his face severely burned. Thankfully, with the help of compassionate veterinarians, he has made a remarkable recovery.
Last April, the Tunica Humane Society reported that a dog named Buddy, known as a “cheerful and friendly dog” who posed no threat to anyone, was intentionally set on fire.
He was discovered with severe burns on his head and a cord wrapped around his neck.
As per WTVA, a child confessed to setting Buddy on fire. However, due to being under 12 years old, the child cannot be prosecuted.
Buddy received care from the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi and underwent medical treatment at the Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Under their supervision, Buddy embarked on a slow but optimistic path to recovery.
“Buddy’s vital signs are stable, but recovering from burns is a challenging journey,” commented Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, an associate professor and veterinarian, to WTVA.
“We ensure his comfort, change his bandages, and address any issues promptly.”
Despite the severe injury, Buddy fortunately retained his eyesight.
Doctors from the Tunica Humane Society believe his eyes are intact. Surgical procedures will repair the damage to his eyelids, potentially restoring some of his vision post-recovery.
Currently, Buddy is still covered in bandages, but his spirits remain high.
“He shows improvement daily,” the Humane Society shared on Facebook. “He impresses his medical team, and everyone is pleased with the progress of his skin grafts. Burn recoveries are slow, but Buddy is excelling in his healing process.”
“During his bandage change today, there was noticeable improvement in his facial appearance. As he continues to heal, he is learning basic commands.”
“This friendly dog did not deserve such a cruel fate,” stated the Humane Society on Facebook. “He posed no threat to anyone. The act was exceedingly heartless and premeditated.”
“I wish for Buddy that some good will come out of his tragic injuries. I hope for change and justice in cases like Buddy’s.”
Following Buddy’s viral story a few months back, he continues to make strides and receives exceptional care from the veterinarians at Mississippi State.
After undergoing skin grafts for his burns, he requires fewer bandages and is gradually reverting to his usual self.
“With his ear bandages removed, Buddy is happier and more playful. He must be experiencing immense joy as he returns to normal life,” as reported by Tunica Humane Society recently.
On August 7, the rescue organization celebrated a significant milestone in Buddy’s recovery.
For the first time since the attack, Buddy’s eye bandages were removed without heavy sedation. This allowed Buddy to see clearly for the first time in over three months.
“He was fully conscious and aware with his eyes open,” affirmed the Humane Society. “Thanks to the overwhelming prayers, Buddy still has his sight.”
“Buddy’s last memory of sight was during the horrific incident before his head was set ablaze by a child. In an instant, his life changed completely.”

Gaining back his vision marks a significant milestone in Buddy’s journey to recovery. His carers note that his true personality is beginning to shine through once more.
“Buddy’s demeanor transformed when he regained his sight,” mentioned Sandy Williams, director of Tunica Humane Society, to WREG.
“He’s now cheerful and playful, strolling through the hospital corridors proudly carrying a ball in his mouth. He adores playing with balls and parades them for everyone to see.”

Despite this breakthrough, Buddy still faces challenges ahead. His recovery is ongoing, and he will require additional procedures to safeguard his eyes, as mentioned by the Humane Society on Facebook.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Buddy will have special needs for the rest of his life.
“His skin will remain sensitive, he may require eye drops, and sun protection will be essential when he’s outdoors,” explained Williams to WREG. “He won’t be able to endure prolonged periods in the sun.”
However, Buddy’s future looks promising: he will soon leave the hospital, move to a foster family for continued care, and the ultimate goal is to find a forever home for Buddy and his companion, Snoop.
Seeing Buddy’s recovery and his return to his cheerful self is truly heartwarming! The dedicated individuals who contributed to his healing have made a remarkable difference in his life.
