Heroic Beagle Wins Award for Rescuing Elderly Neighbor Trapped

We’ve all watched the heroic acts of dogs on shows like Lassie, where they rescue people in need. These heartwarming stories are not just fiction; real-life instances of dogs stepping up to help their human friends are quite common.

Recently, a former shelter dog named Milo proved himself to be a true hero by saving an elderly woman in a time of crisis and is now being recognized for his bravery.

Milo, a beagle, was adopted last year by Makayla Swift in Silver Spring, Maryland (USA). Since joining his new family, Milo has been a cheerful and loving companion.

“He is really full of energy,” shared Makayla’s grandmother, Lavelette White, with the Washington Post. “He loves people. Everyone who knows him loves him. He is just so cute and sweet.”

One day, Milo’s extraordinary instincts came to light when he rushed to help an elderly neighbor in need.

During a walk with Makayla, Milo suddenly darted across the street. “I couldn’t catch him… He started scratching at the front door,” Makayla recounted. “I thought: ‘Why is he literally trying to break into her place?'”

The house belonged to an 85-year-old woman named Sherry Starr. Makayla soon realized why Milo was so insistent on entering the elderly woman’s home: he could hear Sherry calling out for help.

Sherry had indeed fallen in her bathroom earlier that day after hearing the doorbell ring and was trapped between the toilet and bathtub.

“Suddenly, while I was standing there between the toilet and the bathtub, I slipped,” Sherry shared with the Washington Post. “I fell hard onto the tile floor.”

“I couldn’t move at all,” she remembered. “I thought: I’m just going to die here.”

Thankfully, the attentive Milo heard her cries and alerted Makayla to the situation next door. Swiftly, Makayla dialed 911, and paramedics promptly arrived to assist the elderly woman.

Thanks to the quick thinking of Milo, Sherry’s life was saved, earning him the title of a true ‘blessing’ from his owner.

“When this dog felt that his vulnerable neighbor needed urgent help, he led his owner straight to her door,” stated Colleen O’Brien, Vice President of PETA. “PETA hopes that this story inspires people to consider adopting an animal from their local shelter, where so many smart, loving, and determined dogs like Milo are waiting for a family.”
