Witnessing someone help an animal in need is always heartwarming, but a group of hikers went above and beyond. They embarked on a journey up a volcano to rescue an abandoned dog.
The dog was stranded at the summit of Pico de Orizaba, Mexico’s tallest volcano. According to reports, the dog had followed a group of tourists up but was left behind when they descended.
Images of the dog circulated rapidly on Mexican social media platforms, sparking concern for its well-being as it faced the threat of freezing temperatures.
A group of hikers, showing immense courage, decided to undertake a daring rescue mission to save the dog’s life, braving the extreme cold themselves.
Layo Aguilar, part of the rescue team, shared their remarkable story on Facebook. Along with his friend Pedro Ruiz Guerrero and members of the Mexican Alpine Club High Mountain School, they ascended the mountain in search of the dog.
Despite the challenges of a “demanding and perilous” journey, their determination to rescue the dog never wavered.
Upon reaching the summit, they discovered the dog, whom they affectionately named Canelo. Despite being malnourished, with a paw injury and sun-damaged eyes, Canelo had survived weeks in harsh conditions.
The rescuers offered Canelo food and water, which he eagerly consumed, nearly emptying a whole thermos.
However, a new challenge awaited them: descending from the peak with a tired dog in tow.
To tackle this obstacle, they ingeniously decided to transport the dog in a backpack!
Layo recounted how one hiker, equipped with the largest backpack, volunteered to carry Canelo, with the dog’s head peeking out.
Despite the “challenging descent due to the conditions,” the team successfully made their way down.
With the mountain conquered, the focus shifted to finding a new home for Canelo.
The rescuers entrusted the dog to Fátima del Ángel Palacios, a fellow hiker and advocate for stray dogs. She will provide care for Canelo until he recuperates, after which she will seek a loving home for him.
After enduring so much, Canelo truly deserves a happy ending. This heartwarming tale of rescue was made possible by the compassionate team of climbers who scaled Mexico’s highest peak to save him.
