When an animal shelter in Florida cared for a cat with purple paws, they were concerned. The purple color indicated a disturbing reason the cat had been exposed to.

In spring 2017, a Florida organization took in a stray cat that appeared unlike most wild cats.
This cat seemed healthy, except for its unusual purple paws.
Cats fighting with dogs
Megan Sorbara, the shelter coordinator, was worried. Purple paws typically indicate involvement in dog fights for gambling purposes.
“In dog fights, colored markers are used on white-pawed cats to identify the first cat killed. Each cat has a different “color code” and is released among aggressive dogs while cruel spectators watch,” explained Megan Sorbara.
The organization was puzzled about how the cat managed to escape. They questioned if a door had been left open accidentally or if the cat had fled during the night.
Cat adopted
It remains unknown how the cat escaped, but despite its ordeal, it was described as a friendly and affectionate cat by Megan in an interview with The Dodo.
Photos of “Mr. Purple” were circulated, and his story resonated with many, leading to a quick adoption.
