Among animals, a mother’s protective instinct is remarkable. They go to great lengths to safeguard their young, as seen in the recent escape of a pregnant pig from a farm seeking a secure place for birth.
While walking through the woods in Nottinghamshire, England, a dog walker named Anna Aston stumbled upon a surprising scene: a pig nursing a litter of newborn piglets.
“I knew they weren’t wild boars; they just looked like ordinary pigs,” Anna shared with the BBC. “I thought, ‘This doesn’t add up.’ You just don’t find them in a forest.”
Upon witnessing this unusual sight, Anna contacted Brinsley Animal Rescue. Jon Beresford, head of the charity, discovered that the pig had escaped from a nearby meat factory farm to provide a safer environment for her newborns.
“It’s almost as if her motherly instinct goes something like ‘I want to get out of here and have my babies,’ and she’s broken through,” Jon expressed to the BBC.
“Her babies looked fine, but she was skinny and able to graze, not able to forage because she had a ring through her nose,” he informed The Dodo.
The pig was named Matilda, and recognizing her need for assistance, the rescuers refused to return her to the farm after witnessing her courageous act. They initiated a campaign to secure Matilda and her offspring’s freedom, aiming to relocate them to a sanctuary.
Fortunately, the campaign succeeded as the farmer consented to release the pig family, who are now under the care of Surge Sanctuary.
“Matilda & her piglets spent their first night of freedom with us resting,” wrote Brinsley Animal Rescue on Facebook.
“She’s such a good mother to them, she doesn’t have to worry anymore about their precarious situation.”
Tragically, one of the piglets passed away due to a hernia, a common ailment in young piglets, despite rescue efforts to save him.
However, Matilda and her remaining eight piglets are thriving and enjoying life to the fullest.
“Matilda continues her routine, nursing the babies, resting for a while, then exploring the sanctuary, taking a mud bath, grazing, saying hello to the other pigs and cows, then back for another feeding,” stated the rescue organization.
We are delighted that Matilda is now secure. Her maternal instinct to safeguard her offspring ultimately saved their lives.
