Adam Martin found himself in a common situation when he had a piece of popcorn stuck in his teeth.
The 41-year-old father of three attempted various methods to dislodge the bothersome popcorn, including using a pen, toothpick, thread, and even a nail. This was reported by The Sun.
However, he was unaware of the severe consequences his actions could lead to, as he ended up hospitalized with a heart infection.
A week after ingesting the popcorn, Adam, a Briton, began experiencing symptoms like headaches, fatigue, sweating, and eventually suffered a heart attack. Without hesitation, he sought medical attention.
He was diagnosed with endocarditis, an infection believed to have been caused by the items he used in an attempt to remove the popcorn from his teeth.
Potentially Fatal in Three Days
The infection quickly spread through his bloodstream, posing a risk of infecting his heart.
Doctors informed Adam that had he delayed seeking help, he might have succumbed within three days. This information was reported by The Sun.
Adam underwent a lengthy seven-hour surgery and later admitted that he should have simply visited a dentist to prevent such a critical situation.
“Many people do not survive past 350 on the scale, and I was at 340. The infection had damaged all my heart valves,” he shared with The Sun.
“No More Popcorn for Me”
“At one point, it was extremely touch and go. It was the most challenging experience of my life. I was at death’s door and miraculously survived.
The only thing I can attribute to this ordeal is the popcorn stuck in my teeth. But I will definitely steer clear of popcorn from now on.”
I am relieved that Adam emerged from this ordeal unscathed and was able to resume his duties as a firefighter and care for his children.
