Mother’s Horrifying Discovery: 2 Years After Daughter’s Assault by 4 Boys

Being a teenager can be a tumultuous time. It’s a period of rapid changes, self-discovery, and a heightened sensitivity to others’ opinions.

While some look back on their teenage years with nostalgia, many would rather forget the challenges they faced. Why? Because adolescents can be harsh and insensitive, often failing to be accountable for their actions.

In 2011, 15-year-old Rehtaeh Parsons from Canada attended a party with a friend that would mark the beginning of a tragic ordeal.

That night, Rehtaeh was sexually assaulted by four classmates, and to compound the horror, one of them took photos of the assault and circulated them at their school.

Unable to confide in her mother, Leah, Rehtaeh’s health deteriorated in the days following the incident.

Despite Leah rushing her to the hospital, Rehtaeh received no help or support.

The authorities didn’t even question the boys involved or examine the phone containing the incriminating photos.

After a year, the case was closed due to insufficient evidence.

Following this, Rehtaeh’s life turned into a nightmare. She faced bullying both in person and online, with everyone, even her friends, turning against her. Apart from the trauma of the assault, she was constantly reminded of it.

She endured messages soliciting sex and relentless harassment, leading to a state of depression and fatigue.

“They never left her alone. She had to leave the community. People harassed her, it never stopped,” Rehtaeh’s mother recounted to CBS.

On March 3, 2013, she wrote on her Facebook page:

“In the end, we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

17 months after the assault, Rehtaeh took her own life in the bathroom. Her parents found her too late.

With severe brain damage, she was hospitalized, and a few days later, her parents made the heart-wrenching decision to discontinue life support. The odds of her recovery were almost non-existent.

No one was held accountable by the authorities, citing lack of evidence.

Rehtaeh’s father, Glen Canning, believed her daughter succumbed to despair, exacerbated by the inaction of the school and law enforcement in aiding her.

Instances of bullying culminating in tragic outcomes reiterate the urgent need for effective intervention.

Parents advocate tirelessly for their children, yet often find themselves unheard. Meanwhile, perpetrators evade consequences, perpetuating a distressing cycle.

Collective action is crucial to combat such injustices. Let’s strive to prevent more instances where children feel abandoned by society, taking small steps in our daily lives to support and protect them.

Every individual can play a role in fostering a safer environment for our children. Listen to them, empathize with their struggles, and lead by example.
