When we drop our kids off at school, we expect them to be in good hands, whether it’s kindergarten, elementary school, or high school.
It’s only natural for teachers to do their best to care for our children.
This was the belief of the parents of a 6-year-old boy while he was attending Riverdale School in Ohio.
Unfortunately, this trust was shattered for both the boy and his parents.
One day, little Ian was on his way to the bathroom in the school halls when he was unexpectedly confronted by his teacher, Barb Williams.
Initially, the school tried to downplay the incident according to the kindergartener’s parents.
However, after reviewing the security camera footage, it was evident why their son had sustained bruises and injuries, leaving him too afraid to return to school.
The footage revealed Williams grabbing Ian by the face, pushing him against the wall, and then lifting him up by his shirt, as reported by Cleveland19News.
The parents were understandably distraught by the incident.
Williams received a 10-day suspension without pay and later resumed teaching, but Ian’s parents, Anthony and Autumn Nelson, were dissatisfied with the school’s actions.
The lenient response towards the teacher left the parents incredulous.
Anthony expressed his disbelief, stating, “I wonder what would have happened to me if I did that to her. If I did that to her, I’d probably end up in jail.”
“Initially, we thought it was just a minor incident, and that’s what the school told us,” Anthony recounted.
“But then we see those security camera images and this is just completely outrageous,” he added.
Ian suffered bruises on his back from being forcefully pushed against the wall.
“He’s terrified of her,” mother Autumn shared.
Despite the incident, the school principal opted not to terminate Barb Williams, citing her as a highly competent teacher.
Eric Hoffman, the school district superintendent, issued an apology to the family. Moreover, reports were submitted to the police, child protective services, and the Ministry of Education by the school.
Upon the public release of the footage, Williams resigned and faced charges by the police. She admitted guilt and received a $250 fine plus court expenses.
While the teacher was held accountable, the school should have prioritized Ian’s well-being by involving law enforcement and promptly dismissing Williams.
No child should fear going to school, and individuals like Williams should not be allowed near children in the future.

Teaching young children requires immense patience, a quality clearly lacking in Williams based on the video evidence.
Using physical force to establish authority over children is unacceptable and should never be tolerated.
