We all cherish spending quality time with our beloved pets. Some of the most cherished moments involve involving our dogs in our favorite hobbies and activities.
When a gentleman desired to incorporate his passion for water activities with his Golden Retrievers, he took it up a notch by using his creativity to cater to his faithful companions.
David Bahnson, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Vermont, identified that his two greatest joys in life were traveling with his dogs and kayaking. In 2015, he ingeniously merged the two by constructing a personalized kayak explicitly tailored to accommodate dogs.
David transformed the storage compartment of a kayak into a snug “dog-shaped hole,” providing ample room for his dog, Susie. He also added a detachable ring to prevent splashing water.
He shared with Huffington Post UK, “Our dogs have always loved accompanying us on various journeys, be it in cars, my plane, or boats. Crafting a means to kayak with them seemed like a logical decision, and building boats is enjoyable anyway.”
Upon welcoming a second dog, Ginger, he expanded the space further by incorporating a second doggy cockpit into the kayak. He told The Dodo, “It’s like a triple kayak.”
Equipped with a dog-friendly kayak, David could pursue his beloved pastime with his devoted dogs by his side, granting the happy canines a unique opportunity to partake in a kayaking adventure, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
“They genuinely relish it,” he remarked. “They become excited when they see the kayaks being prepared for a trip. They are trained to self-board the kayak on command. Once seated, we set off on our adventure.”
Although Susie and Ginger have now crossed over the rainbow bridge, the lasting memories of the special moments they shared with their caring owner are invaluable.
The specially crafted dog kayak has now been inherited by a new generation. David informed HuffPost UK, “My wife and her friends continue to use the kayaks, now accompanied by our newest Golden, Piper.”
Expressing his affection for his dogs and their companionship, David expressed to The Dodo, “We have paddled countless miles with our dogs. They thoroughly enjoy traveling to various places with us.”
What a brilliant concept! These dogs undeniably adore kayaking in the company of their owner on the water.
