Guard dogs are a common sight worldwide, usually exuding a sense of intimidation when approached – that’s their role, after all.
But encountering the guard dog Cala elicited different emotions. Rather than fear, people felt sadness, empathy, and frustration.
Cala used to protect a car dealership in San Jose, Costa Rica. Sadly, her owner neglected to feed her properly and ignored her illnesses, refusing to seek veterinary care.
Over time, Cala became so weak that she couldn’t even stand. She resorted to sitting in an old tire, her head unable to rest due to a short chain around her neck, causing her skin to deteriorate.
Her head hung from the chain, slowly harming her.
Cala’s health deteriorated as she struggled to hold up her head, affecting her breathing and more.
If intervention did not occur, Cala’s fate seemed destined to be a slow death.
Thankfully, observant neighbors recognized Cala’s dire state and reached out to the police, who then involved the local animal shelter, Territorio de Zaguates, for assistance.
Although the rescue presented challenges, the organization was determined to help.
Regaining Dignity
Upon first seeing Cala, Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates shelter, was deeply moved by the pitiful sight she beheld.
She recounted to The Dodo: “I felt despair, sorrow, and frustration. The image I captured during my initial encounter portrayed a creature robbed of its dignity, on the verge of surrender – a dog whose spirit had been shattered, enduring an endless nightmare.”
Eventually, Cala was rescued from her neglectful owner by the authorities and received veterinary care to treat her injuries, especially the severe wounds around her neck from the tight chain.
Following her medical treatment, Cala found refuge at Territorio de Zaguates, where she recovered physically and emotionally.
Recovery was gradual for Cala; her wounds were challenging to heal, and the emotional trauma she endured left lasting scars on her psyche.
Initially wary of other dogs at the shelter, it seemed that Cala harbored a dislike for them, possibly due to a lack of previous socialization or even training to attack other animals.
However, over time, Cala gradually began to trust and interact with other dogs.
From a state of sickness, weakness, depression, and timidity, she transformed into a resilient and confident being.
“Each day revealed more of her true self. She transitioned from fear towards people to trust and even seeking affection,” Battle described.
Despite finding some semblance of peace at the shelter, Cala faced danger when intruders broke in and left poisoned sausages, claiming the lives of 16 dogs. Miraculously, Cala ingested one but survived, likely due to the quantity consumed relative to her size.
She battled neurological complications but emerged victorious, showcasing her resilience once more!
Cala endured neglect, mistreatment, hunger, and sickness. Her rescue came just in time, and against all odds, she found the strength to survive.
While many animals may not receive a second chance, Cala’s story has inspired countless individuals, warming hearts everywhere!
Today, Cala resides with a caring foster family that provides her with the love and attention she deserves.
Lya Battle has dedicated her life to saving numerous dogs and will continue to do so. Among all the rescues she’s undertaken, Cala’s journey remains unforgettable to her.
