Our furry friends tend to slow down as they age, but families strive to keep them content and cozy during their golden years.
One exceptional family took it a step further by adjusting their own bedtime routine to shower extra love on their senior canine companion.
Spike, a 14-year-old English Springer Spaniel, faced mobility challenges typical of older dogs. Following a recent stroke, he struggled with stairs and moving around as freely as before.
Regrettably, this meant Spike could no longer enjoy his cherished bedtime ritual of snuggling in his family’s bed, a habit since puppyhood.
“The first night we had him, we shut the gate and turned in,” shared Spike’s owner, Catherine Morris, with The Dodo. “He whimpered briefly, then leaped over the gate into my parents’ room and straight into bed! And that’s where he’s slept ever since.”
Since their bedroom was now off-limits to Spike due to the stairs, he persistently attempted to reach them, prompting his family to barricade access for his safety.
However, in a heartwarming twist, they devised a lovely solution: If Spike couldn’t join them upstairs, they would come down and slumber with him on the sofa bed!
Now, the family rotates, taking turns to snooze alongside Spike, ensuring he’s never lonely.
Upon returning from college, Catherine witnessed her parents’ new sleeping arrangement, a demonstration of their profound bond with Spike.
“They are absolutely inseparable,” Catherine shared with The Dodo. “My dad fondly calls him ‘old bean,’ and they’re always ‘communicating.’
“My dad even brings Spike his water and meals to the couch, hand-feeding him to ensure he takes his medication and stays strong.”
Spike might not be as sprightly as his youth, but one constant remains: his family’s unwavering affection.
Through this selfless gesture, they exhibit their commitment to making Spike’s twilight years as comfortable as can be.
“We adore our elderly boy immensely and are grateful to have him in our lives,” Catherine expressed. “Hopefully, we’ve made up for his challenging start by showering him with love.”
Witnessing the lengths people go to for their dog’s happiness is truly heartwarming. Kudos to this family for their exceptional care!
