A Blind Elephant Takes First Steps Towards Freedom After a Lifetime of Abuse

A 46-year-old elephant has taken the first steps towards complete freedom after enduring a lifetime of abuse.

Karma had spent her entire life on the bustling streets of India, burdened with heavy loads, a particularly distressing and sorrowful existence for a blind elephant.

Rescued by Wildlife SOS in December 2019, Karma is now rebuilding her confidence at a new care center.

Facebook images captured Karma’s initial steps towards freedom as she stepped out of the truck, accompanied by the dedicated individuals who had been working tirelessly to save her for months.

“Karma savored her first moments of true freedom as she ventured towards the animal center from the truck,” shared a Wildlife SOS representative.

The compassionate team behind this rescue had raised the necessary funds to secure Karma’s safety, and now she is relishing her newfound freedom.

Initially kept separate from other elephants, Karma was allowed to unwind completely and adjust to her new surroundings. In a Facebook post, the staff expressed how they had all quickly developed an affectionate bond with her.

“Being completely blind, Karma’s transition to her new life will be gradual. Our caregivers will accompany her on leisurely strolls, enabling her to explore her surroundings freely. Our medical team will address her trauma and injuries,” the post read.

Once Karma completes her quarantine period, she will be introduced to the other elephants in the sanctuary. The organization currently cares for three blind elephants and five with severe vision impairments.

The staff also shared a heartening update that Karma had laid down for the first time, indicating her increasing strength and familiarity with her environment.

“It’s truly remarkable to think that just a few weeks ago, Karma was enduring cruelty at the hands of her heartless owner. With your invaluable support, our team rescued her from that hostile environment and brought her to safety,” Wildlife SOS highlighted on Facebook.
