Jean Hillard, only 19 at the time, skidded off the road on December 20, 1980, after an evening with friends in Minnesota, where temperatures had dropped to -30 degrees.
Despite the freezing cold, Jean, realizing the danger, walked about 3.5 kilometers to a nearby friend’s house to seek help, as reported by The New York Times.
Despite her efforts, Jean collapsed mere meters from the house and was found face down in the snow by her friend hours later.
It was Wally Nelson who discovered Jean and quickly transported her to the hospital, where doctors faced the daunting task of reviving her frozen body.
Her body was so frozen that conventional medical procedures were initially impossible. Doctors resorted to using an electric blanket to slowly thaw her.
After 3 hours, a faint heartbeat was detected, and Jean began to show signs of life, eventually making a remarkable recovery against all odds.
Despite the initial grim outlook, Jean defied expectations and after spending weeks in the hospital, she returned home without the need for amputations.
